You can be busy for God and still feel far from Him

Notifications, schedules, even church activity can fill every quiet moment until silence starts to feel uncomfortable. But Scripture keeps calling God’s people back to stillness.

02

An invitation to be still

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”Psalm 46:10 · NIV

Psalm 46 opens with the earth giving way and mountains falling into the sea. In the middle of that chaos, God doesn’t ask His people to try harder. He asks them to stop and remember who He is.

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.Psalm 62:1 · NIV
03

Jesus made room for quiet

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.Mark 1:35 · NIV
But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.Luke 5:16 · NIV

Crowds were waiting and needs were endless. Jesus still stepped away to pray. If He made room for quiet, so can we.

04

God was in the whisper

Exhausted and afraid, Elijah ran to Mount Horeb. God told him to stand on the mountain, for the Lord was about to pass by. Then:

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart…but the Lord was not in the wind.
After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.
And after the fire camea gentle whisper.

Quoted from 1 Kings 19:11–12 · NIV

God is often heard in the quiet, not the noise.

05

A prayer for the overwhelmed

Lord, my mind is loud and my heart is tired. Quiet me. Help me stop striving and remember that You are God. I give You what I’ve been carrying. Speak, and give me ears to hear. Amen.

When were you last quiet long enough to hear Him?

Tomorrow morning, before the noise starts, give Him five minutes. Be still, and know that He is God.
