Ephesians 1:3-14KJV

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; 8Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; 9Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: 11In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 2:4-10KJV

4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

1 John 3:1-3KJV

1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

A prayer about my identity in Christ

Pray it slowly, in your own words if you like.

Father, the world keeps telling me who I am by what I do, what I have, and what others think. Quiet those voices with Yours. You say I am Your child.

Thank You that in Christ I am a new creature, that there is no condemnation for me, and that I was fearfully and wonderfully made. Help me believe it on the days I do not feel it.

Jesus, I am crucified with You, and You live in me. Let my life flow from that, not from striving to prove myself. Set my mind on things above. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What the Bible says about identity

What does it mean to have your identity in Christ?

It means your deepest sense of who you are comes from what God says about you because you belong to Jesus, rather than from your performance, past or other people’s opinions. Galatians 2:20 puts it this way: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.”

What does God say about who I am?

Scripture calls believers children of God (John 1:12; 1 John 3:1), new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17), God’s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10), friends of Jesus (John 15:15), citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20), and “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9).

Does God see me differently when I fail?

Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.” Your standing with God rests on what Jesus has done, not on your best or worst day. God still disciplines His children in love, but He does not disown them.

What does Psalm 139 say about my worth?

Psalm 139:13-16 says God formed you in your mother’s womb and saw you before you were born. David responds, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Your worth was settled by your Maker before you ever did anything.
