A prayer for purpose and calling

Pray it slowly, in your own words if you like.

Lord, I want my life to count for something. Thank You that I am Your workmanship, created for good works You prepared beforehand. Show me the next step.

Help me seek first Your kingdom, love You with all my heart, and love my neighbor as myself. Let whatever I do, I do heartily, as to You and not to men.

Use the gifts You have given me to serve others. Thank You that You who began a good work in me will finish it. Here I am, Lord. Use me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What the Bible says about purpose

What is my purpose according to the Bible?

Every believer shares a common purpose: to love God and love others (Matthew 22:36-40), to glorify God in everything (1 Corinthians 10:31), and to make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). Ecclesiastes 12:13 sums it up: “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”

How do I find my calling from God?

Start with the general calling every Christian shares, then look at the gifts God has given you (Romans 12:4-8; 1 Peter 4:10-11), the needs in front of you, and the counsel of mature believers. Often a specific calling becomes clear as you faithfully serve where you are.

What does Jeremiah 29:11 mean?

God spoke these words to Israel in exile in Babylon: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” It was a promise of hope in a long, hard season, and it reveals God’s faithful heart toward His people.

What does “for such a time as this” mean?

In Esther 4:14 Mordecai urged Queen Esther to speak up for her people, asking, “who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” It reminds us that God places His people in specific places and moments for His purposes.
