Matthew follows the royal line through Solomon to Joseph, the husband of Mary. Luke names Joseph as the son of Heli and traces the line through Nathan; many understand this as Mary's family line, with Joseph as Heli's son-in-law. Matthew arranges his list in three sets of fourteen and passes over some kings. Old Testament names are given in their Old Testament spellings.

The first man, formed by God from the dust and made in his image. Eve, his wife, is called the mother of all living.

Firstborn of Adam and Eve, a farmer who killed his brother Abel.

Asa

Son of Abijah, a king who did what was right and removed idols from Judah.

Son of Asa, a king who sought the LORD.

Uzziah

Son of Uzziah and king of Judah.

Ahaz

Son of Jotham, an unfaithful king to whom Isaiah gave the sign of Immanuel.

Hezekiah

Son of Ahaz, a king who trusted the LORD when Assyria threatened Jerusalem.
