Many of us know it by heart, but rarely pray it from the heart.

Many of us learned the Lord’s Prayer as children, and it is easy to say the words on autopilot. But Jesus gave it to His disciples as a pattern for how to pray, not just a set of words to repeat.

02

Start with who God is

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Matthew 6:9–10 · NIV

The prayer opens with relationship and worship: our Father, Your name, Your kingdom, Your will. Before we ask for anything, we remember who we are talking to. And He already knows what we need.

for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.Matthew 6:8 · NIV
03

Daily bread, daily grace

Then the prayer turns to our needs: bread for today, forgiveness for our sins, and protection from temptation and evil. Jesus invites us to depend on God one day at a time.

Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.Matthew 6:11–13 · NIV
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.Jeremiah 33:3 · NIV

The prayer starts with God before it gets to us. That order changes how we ask.

04

Six requests, one pattern

Each line gives a shape to your prayer: come close, worship, surrender, ask, confess and depend.

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.Hebrews 4:16 · NIV

A prayer in your own words

Father, You are holy. Let Your kingdom come in my life today, and Your will be done in me. Give me what I need for today. Forgive me as I forgive others. Keep me from temptation and deliver me from evil. Amen.

Pray it each morning this week
