James 3:13-18KJV

13Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

A prayer for wisdom and guidance

Pray it slowly, in your own words if you like.

Father, I need wisdom, and You promised to give it generously to anyone who asks. I am asking now about the decision in front of me.

Help me trust You with all my heart and not lean on my own understanding. Let Your Word be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Bring wise counsel around me, and give me ears to hear it.

I can make my plans, but You direct my steps. Close the doors You want closed and open the ones You want opened. Whatever I choose, help me do it for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What the Bible says about making decisions

How do I know God’s will for my life?

Much of God’s will is already revealed in Scripture: to love Him and others, to be holy, to rejoice, pray and give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Romans 12:1-2 says that as our minds are renewed, we will “prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

What does Proverbs 3:5-6 mean?

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” It means bringing every area of life to God and trusting His direction more than your own limited view.

Should I ask others for advice before making a decision?

Yes. Proverbs 11:14 says “in the multitude of counsellors there is safety,” and Proverbs 15:22 says plans fail without counsel. Seek out mature believers who know Scripture and know you well.

What is the difference between worldly wisdom and godly wisdom?

James 3:13-18 says worldly wisdom is marked by envy and selfish ambition, while “the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits.” Godly wisdom shows up in how you treat people.
