Bible Verses About Work and Rest (KJV) + A Prayer for Balance
How do I work hard without it owning me? These 14 passages from the King James Bible hold both together: “whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord,” and “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” God worked six days, rested on the seventh, and invites you into the same rhythm.

Proverbs 6:6-11KJV
6Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: 7Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, 8Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. 9How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? 10Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: 11So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

2 Thessalonians 3:6-13KJV
6Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. 7For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; 8Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: 9Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us. 10For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. 13But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
Work quietly and earn your own living; do not grow weary in doing good.Read in context →
Ecclesiastes 2:22-25KJV
22For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun? 23For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity. 24There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God. 25For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?
Toil apart from God is vexation; enjoyment in work is from His hand.Read in context →

A prayer for work and rest
Pray it slowly, in your own words if you like.
Lord, thank You for the work You have given me. Help me do it heartily, as to You and not to men, whether anyone notices or not. Establish the work of my hands.
Forgive me for the times I have let work become my identity, my worry or my idol. Unless You build the house, I labor in vain. Teach me to trust You enough to stop.
Jesus, I come to You weary and heavy laden. Give me Your rest. Help me keep a rhythm of faithful work and holy rest, and let me sleep in peace, because You give Your beloved sleep. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
What the Bible says about work and rest
What does the Bible say about work?
Work was part of God’s good design before the fall: God put Adam in the garden “to dress it and to keep it” (Genesis 2:15). Colossians 3:23-24 says to work heartily as to the Lord, and Proverbs 6:6-11 and 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13 warn against idleness. Work is a way to serve God and others.
What does the Bible say about rest?
God rested on the seventh day and blessed it (Genesis 2:2-3), and the fourth commandment says, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). Jesus invited His tired disciples to “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). Rest is a gift and an act of trust.
Is it a sin to overwork?
Scripture warns against labor driven by anxiety or greed. Psalm 127:2 says it is vain to rise up early and sit up late, “for so he giveth his beloved sleep,” and Ecclesiastes 4:6 says, “Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.”
What does Matthew 11:28 mean?
When Jesus says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” He offers more than a day off. He offers rest for the soul: relief from trying to earn God’s favor, and a lighter yoke shared with Him.
