25And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, 26And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. 28For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. 29And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. 30And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? 31And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 32And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 33But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

A prayer for healing

Pray it slowly, in your own words if you like.

Lord, You are the God who heals. You know this body, this illness and every fear that comes with it. I bring it to You, and I ask You to heal.

Jesus, You touched the leper and said, “I will; be thou clean.” You turned to the woman who reached for Your garment and called her daughter. Turn toward me, and toward the one I am praying for, with that same compassion.

Give wisdom to doctors and nurses, strength for each treatment, and peace through every waiting room. Whatever comes, keep my heart whole in You and help me trust You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What the Bible says about healing

Does God still heal today?

Scripture shows a God whose character does not change, who calls Himself “the LORD that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26). James 5:14-16 tells believers to call the elders to pray for the sick, which assumes God still answers. He heals in many ways: through prayer, through medicine and doctors, and ultimately in the resurrection, when every sickness ends.

What does “by his stripes we are healed” mean?

Isaiah 53:5 points to the suffering of Jesus on our behalf. Its first meaning is spiritual healing: forgiveness and peace with God through His wounds. Matthew 8:16-17 also connects it to Jesus healing the sick, a sign of the full restoration He will bring.

Why doesn’t God always heal when we pray?

The Bible does not give a simple formula. Paul prayed three times for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed and heard, “My grace is sufficient for thee” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Unanswered prayer is not proof that God does not care, or that your faith was too small.

Is it wrong for a Christian to see a doctor?

No. Luke, who wrote one of the Gospels, was a physician (Colossians 4:14), and Scripture describes medicine being used for healing. Praying and getting medical care go together.
