Psalm 91KJV

1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. 8Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. 9Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. A prayer of protection

Pray it slowly, in your own words if you like.

Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. I place myself and the people I love under the shadow of Your wings.

Watch over our going out and our coming in, from this time forth and even for evermore. Be our hiding place, our strong tower, our shield. Keep us from evil, as Jesus prayed.

When I am afraid, help me remember that You never slumber or sleep. Give me peace to rest tonight, trusting You with what I cannot control. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What the Bible says about protection

What is the best Bible verse for protection?

Psalm 91 is often called the psalm of protection, beginning “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 121 and Proverbs 18:10 (“The name of the LORD is a strong tower”) are also beloved.

Does Psalm 91 mean nothing bad will happen to believers?

Psalm 91 is a promise of God’s presence and ultimate keeping, not a guarantee that Christians will never suffer. Jesus Himself refused to use it to test God (Matthew 4:5-7). Believers still face hardship, but nothing can touch them outside God’s care or separate them from His love.

Can I pray for God to protect my family?

Yes. Jesus prayed for His followers, “keep them from the evil” (John 17:15), and Job regularly prayed for his children. Praying Psalm 91 or Psalm 121 over your family by name is a meaningful practice.

What does the Bible say about angels protecting us?

Psalm 34:7 says, “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them,” and Psalm 91:11 says God gives His angels charge over His people. Scripture points our trust to God Himself, who sends them.
